Trusting Allah on the First Day of School

As parents, the first day of school is a profound mix of hope, excitement, and inevitable anxiety. Whether you are dropping off your youngest for their very first day or watching your older children head into high school, the feeling of letting them step out into the world is deeply emotional. As we prepare our families for a new academic year, grounding our hearts—and our children’s mornings—in the Quran and Sunnah provides the greatest comfort and protection.

The Honor of Seeking Knowledge

In Islam, both secular and religious education hold immense value when pursued with the right intention. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) beautifully emphasized the spiritual weight of this journey:

“Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.” (Sahih Muslim)

Remind your children that their daily journey to school is blessed. Encourage them to memorize and recite this short Quranic du’aa for continuous growth:

وَقُل رَّبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا Wa qur-Rabbi zidnee ‘ilmaa. “and say, ‘My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.'” (Surah Taha, 20:114 – The Clear Quran)

Prayers (Du’aa) for Putting Trust (Tawakkul) in God (Allah)

When we drop our children off, we entrust them to Al-Hafidh (The Protector), one of the 99  names of Allah. Teach your children this essential du’aa for leaving the house, which the Prophet (ﷺ) promised would grant them guidance, sufficiency, and protection from harm throughout the day:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu ‘alal-lahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

“In the Name of God, I have placed my trust in God, there can be no change and no power except by God.” [Authentic, Sunan Abi Dawud]

Additionally, you can actively seek refuge for your children just as the Prophet (ﷺ) did for his grandsons, Hasan and Husain. Place your hand on them before they leave and recite:

أُعِيذُكَ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لامَّةٍ

U’eedhuka bi kalimatil-lahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah.

“I seek protection for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious blameworthy eye.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari) (Note: Say ‘U’eedhuka’ for a boy, ‘U’eedhuki’ for a girl, or ‘U’eedhukum’ for multiple children).

Protecting Our Children Through Sadaqah

One of the most powerful ways to protect our families is through giving charity (Sadaqah). Prophetic tradition is rich with reminders that Sadaqah stands in the way of calamity, wards off hardship, and brings immense barakah (blessings) to our homes and offspring.
